Succulent Tips and Tricks

Indoor Succulent Care

Most succulents need 5-6 hours of sun a day. Indoor succulent dishes need to be in a bright sunny room with indirect light if possible. Direct sunlight will cause it to stretch toward the sun. Water once a week only so the soil can dry out completely between waterings. Water only 1/4 of the depth your container is. Best to water with a long spouted indoor watering can so you can water evenly between each plant.  Most people kill succulents due to overwatering and being in too dark of an area.

Don't panic if the lower leaves have dried out, this happens. Simply remove with tweezers -- it's just making room for new leaves to come through the top. Water less often in winter as they are in a dormant stage. Once every 2-3 weeks is plenty then.

Outdoor Succulent Care

Outdoor succulents need to be climatized slowly to intense sun. For the first few weeks after planting, shelter them a little to prevent burning as they have likely just come from the greenhouse. Water once a week or check when dry. It’s better to give them a long drink of water...and less often. For winter try bringing them inside or tuck them under cover close to your house protected from the rain. Succulents do not like rain. With our West Coast weather, simply move your container under cover until it’s dry again.
